Sanctioned Practices Now Required for Maintaining Club Insurance

From USAwaterski.com:

"An important benefit USA Water Ski provides to its member organizations/clubs is the ability to host and sanction events. As part of sanctioning, USA Water Ski provides General Liability and Participant Accident coverage.  Beginning in 2011, affiliated clubs will be required to formally sanction ALL club practices and exhibitions through USA Water Ski and adhere to the requirements outlined below. Detailed information on the coverage is available under the “Sanctioned Events Program” section of the Insurance Resources link at www.usawaterski.org.

SANCTIONING: Club practice/exhibition sanctioning is available online through the Club’s “Members‐Only” section of our Web site at no charge....  Your club will be able to sanction club practices/exhibitions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as well as view previous sanctions. Or, if you prefer, your club can sanction their practices and exhibitions by completing the following application(s) and submitting it to USA Water Ski’s Competition Department along with a signed Event Sanction Agreement."

The Tyler Ski Club has formally sanctioned club practices through USA Water Ski for the 2011 season (through late December) at both club sites.  As of now, our sanctioned practices are not open to guest members because doing so would require that a certified safety coordinator be present on site while the guest member was present and, to my knowledge, we do not have any members who are certified safety coordinators.

What does this mean for our members?  Because all Tyler Ski Club members are required to maintain active AWSA memberships, the only noticeable change will be that we are no longer required to keep logs of our practices.  But to be clear, the new USA Water Ski sanctioning rules are very broad in its description of "participant."  As we read it, this includes everyone, even those who are riding in the boat.  Fortunately, USA Water Ski now has reasonably priced family memberships at $135.  So those of us with younger children in the boat aren't going to go broke making sure we meet the membership requirements.

What about guests?  The answer is that they have to be AWSA members.  I have contacted USA Water Ski About this and the most cost effective solution for club guests who wish to participate is to purchase a grass roots membership for $35 for the year.  This will ensure that these guests are covered under the AWSA insurance and that the Tyler Ski Club fulfills its contractual obligation to the City.

You can read more about the AWSA changes here.
